There is no single best month
The volcano does not have a season. Its activity is ongoing, and what changes is how easy it is to reach and to see. Ferries and hydrofoils follow seasonal timetables, guided hikes advertise a season, and the sea decides whether a particular boat sails or skips the best viewpoint. No monthly average can promise you a calm crossing or a clear evening.
The dated seasons below let you plan a trip that has full services, and the pages on getting there and hiking give the details. For Sicily as a whole, see the Sicily weather guide. This is an independent guide, not an official source.

The sea decides
Why a good month can still have a bad day.
Boat trips
One operator says plainly that the captain may skip the passage along the Sciara del Fuoco in unfavourable weather. The same trip lasts about 30 minutes of observation and the times move with the length of the day. See boat tours to the Sciara.
Ferries
Liberty Lines makes exceptions for weather that endangers safe sailing. Keep a buffer day before a flight, and do not plan the last boat as your only way out.
Alert level
Hikes depend on the alert level as well as the weather. Check the activity and alert status before you commit, and ask the guides on the day.
Planning by what you want
A simple way to choose.
Full range of services
Travel between mid-March and the end of October. That is the window in which the standard guided hikes run, and summer is when the hydrofoil from Naples operates. Book beds early for the high season.
Quieter months
One residence lists lower prices for April to mid-June and for mid-September to October. Services and timetables change with the season, so plan the crossing first and book the room around it.
Winter
The Ginostra ticket office closes for the winter, but that does not stop the sailings. Check the winter timetables of both operators, and ask your host about opening dates.

The edges of the season
What the dates mean at each end.
Spring
Guided hikes start on 15 March. The vehicle restriction begins on 1 May. The Naples hydrofoil does not start until 30 May, so earlier trips from Naples use the overnight ferry.
Late October
The Siremar plan covers 1 to 31 October 2026, the Liberty Lines plan starts on 1 October, and the hike season and the vehicle restriction both end on 31 October. If you travel in the last days of the month, check what continues in November.
Mid-August
One residence lists 8 to 21 August as its highest price season. Book early and expect to pay more for the same room.
Best time to visit Stromboli: frequently asked questions
What is the best month to visit Stromboli?
There is no single best month. Between mid-March and the end of October the standard guided hikes run and summer adds the Naples hydrofoil. The sea can change any plan on the day.
Is Stromboli active in winter?
The volcano's activity does not follow a tourist season. What changes in winter is the timetable and which services operate, so check the plans of the operators.
Is the Palermo table the climate of Stromboli?
No. It shows long-term averages for Palermo from 1971 to 2000 and is meant only to show the pattern of the seasons on Sicily's north coast.
Do ferries run in winter?
The operators publish seasonal timetables. The closing of the Ginostra ticket office from 1 October does not mean the sailings stop. Check the current plan for your date.
When do the Naples hydrofoils run?
The 2026 summer service listed for Naples to Stromboli runs from 30 May to 13 September, and from Stromboli to Naples from 31 May to 14 September. Outside those dates use the overnight ferry.
