Seeing the Sciara del Fuoco from the sea
The Sciara del Fuoco ("stream of fire") is the steep slope down which material from the summit craters rolls towards the sea. From a boat offshore you can watch glowing rock and sparks after dark, without any climb. That makes a boat trip a popular alternative to a guided hike, which is limited by ordinance.
Boats leave from Scari, the main pier of Stromboli, and from Lipari, which runs combined excursions. Boat trips also leave from Milazzo; see boat tours from Milazzo and the ferry guide. For the island group as a whole read the Aeolian Islands guide.

What to expect on board
Honest limits of a Sciara trip.
No guaranteed show
Activity varies from night to night. A boat can take you to the right place, but no operator can promise lava, good visibility or a long view of the crater. Weather decides the rest.
The captain can skip the Sciara
One operator states openly that the captain may leave out the passage along the Sciara in unfavourable weather. Trip times also shift with daylight, so sunset trips start later in summer than in autumn.
Rules at sea
Navigation and swimming around the island are set by the harbour authority, the Capitaneria di Porto, especially off the Sciara. Distances and closed zones can change, and the skipper follows the current order.
If the siren sounds
Civil protection advice for boats is to increase the distance from the coast and head for open water. Follow the crew's instructions. More on this on our eruptions and safety page.
Questions to ask before you book
Boat trips on Stromboli are run by many small operators, and details differ from boat to boat. A few questions save disappointment later.
- Where and when do we leave? Departure times shift with daylight, so the time that applied in summer may be wrong in autumn.
- How long is the trip, and how many people are on board? One listing mentions a maximum of ten.
- What happens if the Sciara passage is skipped? Ask whether the trip can be moved to another evening.
- When do we get back? If you must catch a ferry the same night, ask for the return time in writing.
- What does the price include? Municipal landing or volcano-access contributions and guide fees are separate items elsewhere on the island.
Choosing where to start
From Stromboli. The simplest option if you are already on the island. Local boat companies at Scari offer night trips to the Sciara and also run boats and transfers to Ginostra. If you sleep on the island you do not have to worry about the last ferry. See where to stay on Stromboli.
From Lipari. Combined trips link Panarea and Stromboli and return late in the evening, around 22:00 according to the offer. They suit visitors based on the other islands.
As a day trip by ferry. An evening boat trip does not guarantee a scheduled ferry afterwards. Check the last departure first, or plan a night on the island. Ferry times are on our getting there page.

Stromboli boat tours: frequently asked questions
Will I see lava from the boat?
Maybe. The Sciara is where material from the craters rolls down, and after dark the glow is easier to see. Activity and weather vary, so no operator can guarantee it.
How long does an evening trip last?
A trip from Scari is listed at one to two hours, with a maximum of ten people on that boat. Combined trips from Lipari are longer and return late in the evening.
How much does a Stromboli boat tour cost?
One travel platform lists a Sciara trip from Scari from โฌ56 per adult. Excursions from Lipari were advertised at โฌ30 to โฌ40 depending on departure time and boat size. These are undated advertised prices, so confirm before booking.
Can the trip be cancelled or changed?
Yes. Unsuitable weather can change the route, and the captain may skip the passage along the Sciara. Ask each operator what happens in that case.
How close does the boat go?
That is decided by the harbour authority and the skipper on the day. Do not rely on a fixed distance quoted online.
Can I combine a boat trip with a hike?
Yes, either on separate days or as a combined tour. Read the hiking page for the rules first, and check the return ferry.
